In collaboration with Jonathan Bobrow, Shantell created a printed circuit board in four parts. Jonathan is an artist/designer/programmer and research assistant at the MIT Media Labs, where Shantell is a visiting scholar/artist.
The idea behind the design was motivated by concepts of efficiency in technology. The project was meant to initiate exposing truths that are just underneath the surface, and focus on the transparency of the objects.
The prototypes of a circuit board tells a story about functionality, so instead of hiding that intriguing element, Jonathan and Shantell decided to highlight its irrevocable functions. Whilst emphasizing that it’s a thing of beauty, its ingenuity and machinery become heightened. During the project, Shantell got into the technical stuff of it all and even learnt to solder.
